Transforming a Historic Buffalo Landmark into a Revitalized Community Recreation Space
In 2024, the City of Buffalo contracted Miller Construction, DBA Scott Lawn Yard, to renovate Masten Park at the city’s center, along with work at the Johnnie B. Wiley Athletic Center.
Masten Park holds deep historical significance in the City of Buffalo. Beginning in 1880, it was the site of Prospect Hill Reservoir, the city’s primary source of drinking water, until the Colonel Ward Pump Station opened in the early 1900s. The original block wall surrounding the reservoir was preserved and still stands at the park’s perimeter.
The site later became the home of the Buffalo Bills as the War Memorial Stadium was constructed. Later, it was nicknamed “the Rockpile” as it fell into disrepair. The stadium was demolished in 1989; however, two towers that formerly served as entrances to the stadium were preserved on the northeastern and southeastern corners of the block, where they still stand to this day.
Miller Construction began the project by installing new water, sanitary, and storm sewer service to the park. Leveraging decades of experience, our utility crew carefully routed the new sanitary and storm lines beneath the historic perimeter wall while preserving its structural integrity.
As work continues through 2025, Miller Construction will transform Masten Park by softening the steep hillside, installing a new softball field complete with shot put and discus circles, and creating new concrete elements surrounding the existing pool. A new concrete plaza will lead visitors to an all-new splash pad and playground area at the park’s entrance, complemented by dozens of new trees and decorative plantings.
At the south tower, formerly part of the War Memorial Stadium, Miller Construction will renovate the concrete pavilion on its backside while also performing parking lot repairs at the North Tower.
